MURAL PANELS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What are "mural panels"?
They're murals painted on 1/8" masonite (hardboard) cut to the desired size. The masonite is prepared with white "gesso" to seal and prime the surface. After the mural is done, the panels are affixed to the wall with screws that go through them and into the wall. When I do mural panels, I provide touch-up paint to cover the screws after mounting.
The thinness of the boards makes these paintings more "mural-like" than something painted on canvas, because they are so thin they almost look like part of the wall!
Q: Why order mural panels?
For those who cannot, or choose not to, order a full-wall mural from me, mural panels can be a good solution. They are portable, which means if you sell the house, you can take them with you. If you live in an apartment, they're a great way to get a mural without creating an unhappy landlord. And, if you should outgrow the mural or choose to redecorate, you can sell it on eBay!
The most common reason, however, is geographical distance. I can only do full-wall murals that are within a town or two of my home near Worcester, Massachusetts.
Q: How much do mural panels cost?
I price them according to my hourly rate plus the cost of supplies and paint. Please contact me to discuss what you want and I'd be happy to provide a quote. The mural panel cost I provide does not include tax or any costs associated with packaging and delivery. (Sometimes clients pick them up if they are near enough.)
Q: Do my panels have to be done on masonite (hardboard)?
No, they can be done on stretched canvas too. I do not stretch my own canvas, though, so the sizes of each panel would be governed by the sizes of canvas available to me through my local supplier. Canvas is easier to mount on the wall than masonite, as no drilling is required. It is, however, considerably more expensive. The masonite is a very low cost material.
